Hartmann was firmly dedicated to the promotion of young French composers, nearly all of whom were habitués of his shop, and he published works by most of them. His list included Bizet, Franck, Lalo, Saint-Saëns, Paladilhe, Delibes, Guiraud and Joncières, and his star property was Massenet, all of whose works until 1891 were published by Hartmann. A set of six songs by Bizet composed in July 1868 and published in the autumn were some of the first pieces he brought out.

For “Ma vie a son secret”, the first song, Bizet went to a well-known poem by an obscure poet, the “Sonnet” of Félix Arvers, published in his Mes heures perdues of 1833. Whether Bizet deliberately altered the first line from

Mon âme a son secret, ma vie a son mystère
